As part of our mission to enable sustainable development in China, we engage the public directly and drive green momentum through our non-profit initiatives – including environmental education in schools, public green events, and internet resources. We developed these programs ourselves, gradually adapting them as we found out empirically what techniques are most effective in China.

These endeavors are directly informed by our mission; they form the knowledge base that makes our consulting arm so effective. The nature of environmental work makes it critical to understand the complex values and needs of the community, and this level of understanding requires an integrated approach that goes beyond surveys and studies. As part of this effort, we train volunteers as environmental ambassadors in order to extend our reach far beyond what our team could do, and to further engage the public in thinking about and understanding sustainability. For clients and partners that recognize the benefits of direct engagement and wish to get more closely involved themselves, our experience and ongoing initiatives provide unique opportunities to directly influence their communities.

GECKO

Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach (GECKO) was established in 2008 to offer free, innovative educational programs to smaller city schools in China, inspiring children to become environmental ambassadors to their communities and encourage their friends, family, and future employers to develop a more sustainable lifestyle.

GECKO goes beyond traditional educational models and challenges young people to carry on the message of environmental responsibility not only to other generations at home, but also to future employers. GECKO contributes towards participants’ future career choices by including elements of the local community and industry that support environmental progress. The integrated approach of our program creates further networking opportunities between local government, industry, academia and media toward improving current conditions.

In November 2009, we launched our Greennovate Train the Trainer program, in which we will enlist and train university student volunteers to deliver our GECKO program to Chinese high schools themselves. To learn more about this exciting new program, click here.

MaGiC

Made GREEN in China, is an open initiative to challenge the traditional mindsets locked into the label, “Made in China”. MaGiC’s mission is to inspire youth in developing a China that is green and healthy for themselves and future generations. While working with business and youth in China, Greennovate developed the idea for MaGiC in response to the following needs:

* a deeper understanding of environment
* a shared vision of greener China among consumers and business
* the spread of sustainable business practices in China

Businesses have a unique opportunity to explore evolving responsible consumerism, contribute their expertise and show their commitment to sustainability. For youth, MaGiC provides an opportunity to learn about sustainability through hands-on experience.

MaGiC began in 2009 with a green design competition intended to show designers their role in building a sustainable world, bring attention to environmental challenges and solutions and introduce the concept of waste as a resource.

To supplement and extend our on-the-ground initiatives, we reach out to a wider audience by providing green resources online through our green blog and social networking mini-sites. These pages keep youth informed and inspired with otherwise-scarce Chinese-language information on the green movement and resources to learn more deeply about sustainability.

As with most Greennovate initiatives, we’ve done so with the help of our network of volunteer contributors. They have assisted us daily in writing, translating and compiling the best of what the web has to offer for learning more about how to start thinking green on a daily basis and help the effort for sustainability in China.
